As you may know, with the “Death of Internet Marketing” report, I did a survey and received thousands of responses back from marketers currently online.

What was interesting to me was this survey question.

59.06% of people surveyed have been online for less than year -

And OVER 4 out of every 10 are new to online marketing within just the last 6 months.

This means that people are coming in at a very rapid pace.

Also, of all the people surveyed, here is some more data collected.

So over 50% of the marketers see themselves as a newbie or state that they are having trouble.

As I talk with Joe, my new apprentice in office, many things have occurred to me in the last 6 weeks since he started with me.

When I say things like “SEO, Squeeze Page, Header Graphic, Click Thru Rate, Domain Name” etc..

… He is always like, “Mike, slow down. Go back please and explain to me what you mean when you say xyz.”

In fact, just yesterday, I told him to create and account in a discussion forum. When he got there, he was not even sure how to click on a post in the forum.

This information, complied with the results of the recent survey, shed light on something that was very revealing to me.

So many times, marketers… myself included, create great information products for marketers.

What is interesting to note, is while this information is very good… It does no good if you have not been able to at least master the basics yet.

Don’t you agree?

And also, I think it just creates too much fluff if everyone of these products is written for a complete newbie.

We hope the newbie has mastered “some” of the basics to take advantage of the advanced strategies included in these step by step course.

In fact, one of the hottest products in clickbank right now was written like this. This product, “Project x” had ZERO fluff.

And half the people loved that.

The problem was, Chris the owner, had small issues with the other half. Maybe you? The newbie.

So just 2 days ago, he had to release a video showing people how to do things like “Sign up at ClickBank”

Know what?

2 Months ago I would have been like, “Come On. really, you need to do that for some people?”

But after listening to Joe, and reading the survey, it has become clear to me.

Newbie’s need to learn Basic things for themselves to make it through some great ebooks and software.

…Just yesterday, I was in a forum.

You see, I get told all the time, and I see it on forums,

So true, but it can be done free. But for $59, to shorten the learning curve in just one place… I can not give you better advise.

This time, he advertises a website to make sales. This high school kid figured it out.

Many of us know the opposite. We have a website that converts, but no Traffic.

So if you have a site that converts at 24%, but get 1 visitor per year, it would take you 4 years to make a sale.

TRAFFIC + CONVERSION go hand in hand.

Back to why I wrote this today. I talk a lot on stage about Traffic and Conversion when I speak.

But it was by John Reese who I (and many) first so it broken down as follow.

Again, simple, eloquent, yet “extremely” powerful.

I will get to buying Traffic in a minute. But for the Borrow and Create.

We know Borrow to be:

Integration Marketing
Having an effective Affiliate Program

And Create Traffic to be:
SEO - Search Engine Optimization
Writing Articles

While “Borrowing” Traffic is great and one of my favorite ways to get traffic, it is sometimes a short term strategy and only part of the Equation.

And “Creating” traffic is important, it can be slow tedious and take a while to see the fruits of the labor. It will come, but it takes time. It is like planting seeds on the internet. Sooner or later you will have grass, but you need to be patient.

*** Here is the wake up call.

Many marketers concentrate on the last two.

They require little to no budget at all. And the problem is, you are not in total control of the amount of traffic you want.

The bottom line is, while both are effective, you should only allocate a fixed amount of time to these each week. This should not make up your total marketing strategy for getting traffic.

Remember before I spoke of BIG ROCKS?

…Well, that comes from the analogy that if you want to be as effective as you can when filling a bucket you need to start with the Big Rocks.

OK, so you have gravel, stones, even sand.

To be effective, you start with the BIG ROCKS.

Then later, after your ADJUSTED the BIG ROCKS, you and the stones-adjust and pack it down, then the sand, pack it more, then you can even add the water.

Now, notice I said to ADJUST AND PACK before moving to the next step.

What that means, is you need to improve the big rocks before you go to the small ones. You can be more effective when you improve the big rocks first.

So how does this analogy tie in to TRAFFIC.

Well, I said a few things

1 - When you control TRAFFIC (and conversion) you are a force to be reckoned with.

2 - You need to BUY traffic

3 - You need to start with the BIG ROCKS

Get ready, I am about to expose to you one of the most mis-understood and under used tools on the market.

*** Google Adwords ***

You see, many marketers look at advertising as a cost or expense.

It is not. It is an investment.

But Newbies, and many others do not want to spend money.

They forget that spending money to make money is one of the most logical things you can do.

Spend $1 today to make $2

Well, then Spend $1000 to make $2000

GOOGLE ADWORDS = THE BIG ROCK

Now, many of you know I surveys the market recently.

The results are totally mind blowing.

** Almost 1 out of 3 people never used Adwords to market online.

** And of those that DID try it, 50% of them quit using the most powerful tool on the planet.

(I will get to why first. And if you are reading, you may know the answer. It is one of the 2 things that control your destiny online.)

Now here is the saddest part.

58% percent of those that DO USE AdWords, spend less than $500 per month. Again.. Know why? You should, but if not, I will get there….

And only 3% of those that are CURRENTLY USING AdWords spend more than $1000 per month.

So let me tie this all together for you.

If AdWords is the BIG ROCK, that can get you all the TRAFFIC you ever wanted, why are you not using it?

Answer…

Come on, You should know.

POOR CONVERSION.

Heck, I bet anyone reading this can get 10,000 visitors to their site using Google Adwords. Set your budget to $5000 for the day and you may get 10,000 visitors.

But, with POOR CONVERSION, you will maybe make lose $7000.

Again, TRAFFIC AND CONVERSION go hand in hand.

The truth is, if you could spend $10,000 to make $14,000 you would do it every day of your life until it stopped working.

So why are many failing. (Because now we know every one should be using Adwords.)

The reason is, many never ADJUST THE BIG ROCK.

They either move on, or say “This is not for me.”

Remember, the good news is, when you know testing and conversion, your campaign is the worst it is ever going to be.

We need to remember this…

“We Can Only Improve That Which We Measure”

So you need make sure that you build your business with testing and tracking in mind. This will allow you to increase CONVERSION and make winning campaigns that will allow you to spend as much
money as Google will send you traffic for your keywords.

And then after you test the Campaigns for weeks and months, you can go after the smaller stones of Traffic that you can buy.

Or, you can start a new bucket, with Big Rocks in an new Niche or with a new product.

And once you learn what Conversion works for the last marketing place, you have a tested base to start with and a lower learning curve. Repeat.

Here are the basic things that need to be tested and improved in an Adwords Campaign.

#1 - The Copy in the Adwords Ad
#2 - The Landing Page
#3 - The Final Offer

I am not going to go into too much here, this is a course in itself.

But you need to
- spilt test your Ads in #1
- spilt test the conversion on your landing pages.
- split test i your sales pages

In each of the scenarios above…

… Split testing involves finding a “Control”, or the best converting piece to date and putting it against a test. If the test loses, try a new test. If the test wins, it becomes the control and you never stop until you feel your time is spent better improving other “buckets” with more potential.

Now, in order to me a pro with converting, you need to understand basic Sales Copy principles.

The best marketers, even the ones that outsource Sales copy, are still great students in sales copy and copywriting.

In fact, many of them are much better than their ghostwriters or copywriters they hire, but time does not allow them to do it all.

But, the key is, they take what is given to them by the copywriter and start testing from there based on their skills.

When you know the power of copywriting and why people buy, you know have what it takes to master Conversion when you combine that with testing and measuring.

So, here is what you should get out if this newsletter today.

#1 - When you master both Traffic and Conversion you control your destiny.

#2 - AdWords is the BIG ROCK in Traffic.

#3 - You need to be a master converting clicks to visitors, visitors to prospects, and prospects to buyers. You do this with Testing and understanding sales copy like a pro.

Yes, of course their is the list building etc. But that means crap, I mean it, until you stand on a foundation of TRAFFIC and CONVERSION.

Forget about much of the crap thrown at you to distract you.

Ask yourself this next time.

Back from Vegas Updates

November 22nd, 2006

It’s been over a week since I had a chance to get in front f a PC with time to write…

I am just getting back in the groove at my office.

Let me first say “Happy Thanksgiving” to all of you that celebrate this day in the US.

All last week I was in Las Vegas. It was not a seminar at all.

It was my affiliate summit…

I was out with my top affiliates for the year. We went to great shows, VIP parties, lost and won money, ate like we were trying to get on as contestants for the show “The Biggest Loser” on TV, and had a chance to network.

Some cool people were there.

One of the guys from DoubleYourDating.com…

The Rich Jerk himself was there… He may be a Jerk, but he is brilliant. Some of you will meet him at his customer appreciation next year at the Playboy mansion. There is a lot to learn from him as a marketer.

Rich Schefren was there as well as Shawn Casey and Joel Comm & Eric Holmund.

Other guests were, Dan Kelly, Jason James, Andrew Fox, Dave Mizrachi, Tome Beal, Donna Fox, Costa Dedes, Jeff and John Walker, Sterling Valentine, Michael Cheney, Harris Fellman, Mark Braunstein, Simon Leung, and a few
others cameos as well…

We had a chance to talk about many things at a Pow-Wow session on Friday in a private room I got at the hotel. Many great connections were made.

Also, I am reading a great book. It has been around for a few years but it is my first chance to read it.

It is called, “Good to Great” by Jim Collins.

Actually, most of the books I read I also buy on CD.

The Squeaky Wheel gets the Grease

In case you missed the email I sent…

Hi guys,

I just wanted to write you a short update about recent events.

Did you every hear the expression:

‘The Squeaky Wheel Gets the Grease?”

That means a few things really. But the one that most people will not argue is this…

… The person that makes the most noise gets the most attention.

This is good sometimes, but sometimes bad.

When in school, we saw this with the bad kids that were causing trouble always got the teacher attention.

In business, it is the customer that complains the most sometimes that gets all of the discounts (because sometimes business people allow it.)

I say, fire your bad customers (the real bad ones, not the ones that hiccup a bit) but that is for another day.

Also, if you want to be noticed by your boss, an attractive person, a fellow JV partner, we say… “The squeaky wheel gets the grease.”

If your wheel is not squeaking, most likely you will not get grease or attention.

In fact, one of my Good Friends recently was telling me how is was surprised that he had never been asked to speak at one of the top seminars around.

He said, so-and-so and I get along great, I wonder why he has not asked.

I told him of a story about how I made it know (attracted it) to the same person and later was asked the next year. So I asked him,

“Does he know you are even interested or have the desire. You should tell him.”

He said, “I am sure he knows…”

I replied, “He is a busy person, if you let him know, it will be at the top of his mind.”

So my friend , when the time was right, made his interests known.

…And guess what? That wheel just got greased

He got a call to be a featured speaker at an upcoming event.

But also, the squeaky wheel sometimes gets the grease when they have nothing of value to add.

You see, with with the report I published this week, the great majority of  people got the message I was getting at.

But some people just do not get anything.

Side Note: I read every review on the blog and a few of the negative ones, even though I do not agree, I respect because they made some really great points. - Many of which as me thinking.

But some people are just so negative and make accusations of the purpose of this report. For the record, I have nothing I am trying to pre-sell  anyone on.

And had I, I was have made hints to it in the report and I would have had a different marketing style for it.

So back the the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

I was talking with a good friend yesterday on the phone and he asked me what I was going to do next.

I said, I am not sure, I am sure lot’s of eyes will be on me for a few weeks. Some people would love to, and are looking for anything I do and use it to position against anything I said.

For instance, I said in the report that I had about 8 more prior commitments to other JV partners for November and December that I wanted to get out.

And after that, I would start to make changes.

But there was one today I decided not to fulfill at this time and waited until next week.

He said to me, “Mike! No matter what you do there will always be a small group of people that will bash you and spin anything you do. Just keep doing what you do. You have good judgment and take care of your people. Those that know you…Know you. Those that do not… Do not.”

I would suggest (if you have time, I know you are probably very busy) to go back and read the blog.

You see, after talking to my friend, I realized, the squeaky wheel most often does get the grease.

It only takes one person to make a lot of noise in a library of 100 others trying to do the right thing.

So that helped me to realize something I wrote about almost 2 years ago.

“You can’t be all things to all people. And if you try, you end up being nothing to no one.”

You have to know what you believe in. Those that do not connect with you will not. Those that do will.

I wanted to build a new base of subscribers, that I could build a good relationship with.

Will I market to this list. Of course. Again, it is transparent here. You are reading this because you ARE too most likely a marketer.

After all, if a new product comes along and I have a chance to review it and share my thoughts, explain how I think it is right for, it could only benefit those people in which it compliments their vision.

I am a marketer, and I am proud of that. So, too, should you be.

I do not want anyone to be on this list that will take offense to ever getting a product review, offer, offer for my own product, or if you just do not like me or my content.

It is not a waste of my time. Writing to 49 or 49,000 does not take me anymore effort.

And not that I am looking to get a huge unsubscribe rate today, I would like to get an accurate one.

One that will save YOU time in the future.

So if you are not one of the people that can deal with an occasional email from me, an occasion offer, my style of content, or if you are one of those we see on the blog that just plain does not like me….

My First Public Repsone

I hope your day is doing well.

It is a bit hectic for me here. I flew in from Brad and Andy’s Stomper event last night.

There was fog problems in NYC and we were delayed about 3 hours and I got home around 3 am.

So today, I am trying to get things back to normal at my office.

Some of you know, but many do not.

The report was not to go out until Wednesday.

*** The site never officially launched.

I spoke about the following in a forum and people think it is part of a ‘Fake Buzz’ story.

If the following was TRUE, I would fess up to it in a wink.

But here is really what happened and if you look at the timeline of events, it happened just like this…

(and do not get me wrong. I have no regrets.)

I was getting ready to go home to pack at 1AM on Friday Night to catch a 6AM flight to Atlanta for the Stomper Net event (was a lot of fun.)

I told Gary Ambrose about the report on Instant Messenger and told him to read it, and tell other friends of his to create an account that it could benefit him well because of the referral program on the second tier

… Well, he sent an email to a few people and one of the was….

… JOEL COMM

He sated “DO NOT EMAIL. The site is not ready and Mike will let us know when it is live when he gets back home on Monday.”

Well, Joel saw the link and did not read the entire message.

He read the report and sent a review to his entire list.

He called me (while I was eating breakfast in the hotel) 1 hour before I was to speak live on stage, and said,

“Dude… I just emailed for you.”

I said, “What??!! Very funny… Ha Ha”

He then told me he was not kidding and I asked him how it happened. He quickly read the email and said… “Ooops, now what?”

Well, as that was happening, Tom Beal was with me and heard us talking.

Tom says,

“I just got an email about it from Brian.

… I just got one from Ian

… There is a thread about it in the Warrior Forum.”

And just like that, as they say… All hell broke loose.

I did not even have it proof read.

So Tom did a fast proof read. V 1.2, Then later did another one. V 1.3

And late yesterday, Heather Vale did V 1.4 (you can now login to read it with little or no grammar errors or type-o’s.)

I had one hour before I spoke and now had to set up the Word Press Blog and activate the survey and TEST the site.

I was not able to see what was going on because I was at the event. I checked email late at night and then once on Sunday before we got on the plane to get back home.

Here are some of the results…

In just over 24 hours, we had over 34,346 people create an account to get the report.

Saturday - 11,807 (Day One - 13 hours total)
Sunday 14,196 (Full Day)
Monday - 8,343 (First 17 hours)

Total = 34,346

Unfortunately, we had some issues with the double opt-in emails coming in on time and only have 67% double opt-in rate so of those numbers, only 67% read the report.

Just a few things to address what people are asking.

I will leave the site up for about 2 weeks in its current format. I will then change the site and allow people to either refer the report via the site or just link to the PDF on their server. But I have not yet decided on that.

Some other interesting things is that I never even told my own members. Not even sure yet if I will. I would bet 95% of them heard about it already from someone else…

Maybe I will post it on my blog :)

I am blown away that just sending one Instant Message has led to this.

Just one marketer sending 1 email had this spread so fast. Of course it uses viral marketing, but even I was blown away.

Now, Alexa is not the most accurate way to judge traffic for many reasons, such as they do not work with the FireFox toolbar and many marketers have the toolbar installed at a greater percentage than the real world.

However, according to ALEXA.com, there were only 140 sites in the entire world that got more traffic than this ours. (Yeay!)

I have not ever seen a marketing site reach that. I am sure a few have, but it is the first time I saw anything reach that low.

Some other notes. The report ends very short, leavening even me to feel… “That was a soft ending.”

I also want to clarify some stuff in the subject on the “Skulls”

I will either make a new version, a supplement report, or just post some stuff on the blog

Also, I want to thank those that took the time to do the survey. Fascinating results. I was surprised at many of the numbers.

The report has caused some controversy, as expected, and I laugh at people that think they can read my mind as to what I was up to.

The truth is, I want to write on this topic. That is where it ends.

I got the idea of how to do it just a few weeks ago.

I reg’d the domain and the site went live (by accident) just 14 days later.

So I did not have time to really think too much about it other than getting the report out to as many people as possible.

Other than that and building a new relationship with you, there was not that much more to why.

The report spoke of my real feelings.

Finally, I want to Thank Keith Baxter and Scott Boulch.

Their marketing campaign for their Death of AdSense report, inspired me on how to market this.

I do not know Scott, but Keith and I are good friends.

I wanted to call/email Keith on Monday to ask him to review it and share with his members and get his feedback.

It went live before I had a chance to contact him and at first I am sure he was like… “What? Come on!”

But we have spoken and he liked the report as well and he knows how much I appreciate is marketing.
